Fr. Bill’s CD Lyrics

Paintbrush in the Green : Holy Duct Tape

(One thing about the Irish: the gift of humor can be used to break the tensions and trials of life. Wendy had an expression that inspired this: she’d say she prayed the Lord would give her “Holy Duct Tape” to keep her from speaking when she shouldn’t. The virtues are called self-control and prudence. But “Holy Duct Tape” just sounds so much sillier. Thanks to Dan Schieder who played drums and duct tape on this track, and Teresa Mayer who un-rolls the grey stuff with amazing skill at live performances!)

Lord of love and grace…my attitude is heading South!
I cannot hold my tongue—so—duct tape my mouth!
Help me stop before I speak,
Give me pause so I can think and pray
Close tight my lips to keep me from
what I know I’m not supposed to say!

If only my own self control were thicker than a French-made crepe
I’d remember to use faith, hope and love
as much as that adhesive tape
So many times I heard myself speak too quick
Then get stuck in a rut.
Now I’m asking you Lord,
I give you permission to…duct tape me shut!

Lord of love and grace…my attitude is heading South!
I cannot hold my tongue—so—duct tape my mouth!
Help me stop before I speak,
Give me pause so I can think and pray
Close tight my lips to keep me from
what I know I’m not supposed to say!

I know you made me and you call me for a life that’s gentle and kind
But unforgiveness and pessimism are the cataracts making me blind
Help me learn forgiveness even if it takes me 7 times 70 tries
You can keep my sight from sinful blight, just—duct tape my eyes!

Lord of love and grace…my attitude is heading South!
I cannot hold my tongue—so—duct tape my mouth!
Help me stop before I speak,
Give me pause so I can think and pray
Close tight my lips to keep me from
what I know I’m not supposed to say!

There’s so much sorrow and pain in this world
as forces try to pull me apart
I’ve been tried and tested and pride-congested
Making a stone in my heart.
I know you give a love for music,
so a song of praise can be sung
But when my music’s story doesn’t give you glory
Just—thuc thape my thung!
